Stacker is seeking a Content Operations Lead who will work closely with leadership to coordinate and optimize workflows within the newsroom and between the newsroom and other Stacker teams. This individual will help improve our processes for creating journalism to increase overall efficiency, ensure smooth collaboration with other parts of the company, provide leaders with data analysis and insight into performance against deliverables, and oversee our content workflow management system.

The ideal candidate will be a clear and direct communicator, kind and generous to colleagues, and someone who thrives on solving hard problems. They will bring editorial experience, technical acumen, and analytical prowess – helping us understand and execute a wide-range of tasks and projects.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as product owner for the newsroom workflow project management tool and its integrations to other Stacker systems; this includes maintaining data quality, adjusting and adding automations, making updates, and working closely with technical teams to troubleshoot issues.
  • Create and maintain process documents and centralized newsroom training documents – ensuring editorial documentation is up to date, easy to find, and simple to use.
  • Work with the Editor in Chief, Managing Editor, and other leaders to identify, document, and roll out workflow improvements.
  • Own and maintain reporting/dashboards for metrics tracking/KPIs, as well as individual and team level newsroom task and story management.
  • Pulling, analyzing, and presenting data in an easy-to-understand way to identify potential workflow improvements and help newsroom leaders make data-driven decisions.
  • Oversee the monthly freelancer payment process.
  • Develop onboarding and training programs for freelance and full-time team members regarding editorial workflows and tooling.
  • Ad-hoc project work in support of the newsroom.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience in Editorial or Content Operations, ideally within a newsroom environment.
  • Previous experience and comfort with workflow/project management systems to develop workflows (i.e. Asana, Trello, Smartsheet, Monday.com, etc.) as well as CMS’s; this includes report and dashboard creation, cleaning data, troubleshooting issues and making improvements.
  • Understanding of how a newsroom is organized, the key roles within one, and workflows and procedures related to journalism and publishing. Experience working with teams tangential to a newsroom (i.e. content partnership teams, distribution, etc.) a plus.
  • Problem solving experience to make a journalistic process more efficient.
  • Extensive project managing experience, especially complex workflow updates across a cross-functional team.
  • Ability to track, report on, and analyze newsroom-specific metrics (on-times, capacity tracking, etc.) and turn them into actionable insights.
  • Advanced proficiency cleaning up and analyzing data in Google Sheets and/or Excel, using formulas, pivot tables and data filters/sorts.
  • Experience with documenting and capturing processes, to-dos, and trainings.
  • Highly motivated, willing to learn new technologies and able to work both independently & cross-functionally to drive projects through to completion.
  • Organized with excellent prioritization skills to navigate a fast-moving, changing environment.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and ability to shift from strategic to detail-oriented initiatives.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
